US Sanctions are Starving Millions of Afghans
- The U.S. State Department encouraged the Pakistani government in a March 7, 2022, meeting to remove Imran Khan as prime minister over his neutrality on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, according to a classified Pakistani government document obtained by The Intercept.
- U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Donald Lu: "People [in the U.S.] and in Europe are quite concerned about why Pakistan is taking such an aggressively neutral position [on Ukraine] ... "I think if the no-confidence vote against the Prime Minister succeeds, all will be forgiven".
- Israel says it launched about 20 drone strikes in Jenin as part of an assault involving 1,000 Israeli troops with 150 armored vehicles
- “We support Israel’s security and right to defend its people against Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and other terrorist groups,” a spokesperson for the White House National Security Council said
- Amid the ongoing raid, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu touted US support for Israel, which includes $3.8 billion in annual military aid. “Security cooperation has never been better; intelligence sharing has never been deeper.”
CIA Director William Burns expressed frustration with the Saudis, according to people familiar with the matter. He told Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman that the U.S. has felt blindsided by Riyadh’s rapprochement with Iran and Syria—countries that remain heavily sanctioned by the West—under the auspices of Washington’s global rivals.
A pair of US raids against ISIS targets in Syria were carried out by US forces overnight Thursday into Friday. At least three ISIS leaders were reported slain, including Bakkan Wahid al-Shammri. Officials say the goal is to degrade ISIS across the region. They are also reportedly worried about the size of ISIS detainees in open air camps in Syrian Kurdistan, particularly with leaders trying to reassert themselves.

Graphika and the Stanford Internet Observatory released a study showing a “series of covert campaigns over a period of almost five years” that pushed pro-Western misinformation on Twitter, Facebook and five other social media platforms. The operations targeted people living in Central Asia and the Middle East.
